Port of Houston Authority

Tuesday, May 19, 2015
9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Sponsored by Stantec

Experience one of the busiest ports in the world aboard the Port of Houston Authority's inspection vessel, the M/V Sam Houston. Named for the legendary military commander who led the fight for Texas independence from Mexico and later statehood, the M/V Sam Houston is a 95-ft vessel that features air-conditioned lounge seating as well as standing room outside on the boat's deck. The tour consists of a 90-minute round-trip cruise along the Houston Ship Channel where attendees will enjoy passing views of international cargo vessels, and operations at the Port's Turning Basin Terminal. This terminal is the nation’s largest break-bulk terminal with more than 6.3-million-tons of steel unloaded in 2014 as well as automobiles, chemicals, fuels and general cargo.  The tour passes by public and private docks that handled 1,495 deep draft ships in 2014 (plus thousands of barges), and a hydraulic pipeline dredge maintaining the federal channel. Additionally, the tour will include a short demonstration of one of the Port’s new fireboats, capable of over 40 knots, and equipped for a medical evacuation under NBC conditions. This year, the channel celebrated the 100th anniversary of its dedication as the first cost-shared deep draft channel in the U.S.
