2020 Call for Presentations

DEADLINE: Friday, January 24, 2020

The New York State School Boards Association is pleased to issue a Call for Presentations for it's Annual Convention & Education Expo, to be held at the New York Hilton Midtown in New York City Oct. 29-31, 2020.

This is your opportunity to share your knowledge and expertise with more than 2,000 school board members and education leaders across New York State.

In crafting your presentation proposal, keep in mind the needs, interests and issues of concern to school board members across New York State. Proposals are ranked and scored by a review committee. Please be certain that your topic or program is clearly written with precise learning objectives. Sometimes learning objectives are not clearly understood and as a result the proposal does not advance. Have a neutral and trusted colleague read your proposal for feedback prior to submission. Program submissions should be substantive with key principles, practices, and programming elements which can easily be adapted. Make certain that your proposal is clear; avoid heavy theoretical components and ambiguity. Finally, this is a 75-minute presentation, to include time for question and answer, so be realistic as to how much you can cover. Proposals including more than two presenters will not be given consideration, as we are not soliciting panel discussions this year.

In this year’s Call for Presentations, we’re looking for sessions that will increase attendee engagement. Here are some suggestions:

  • Break presentations down into 10-15 minute segments. After each segment, involve the audience in discussing a question
  • Game formats significantly boost energy and involvement
  • Bridge any experiences you share by immediately giving a specific example that is laser-beam focused on the day-to-day realities of the school board member – our target audience
  • Keep the presentation moving – time management is critical
  • Presentation slots are 75 minutes in duration, to include 10-15 minutes for Q&A

You are eligible to submit a proposal if:
  • You are available Thursday, Oct. 29 – Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020
  • Your school district or legal firm is a current NYSSBA member in good standing through the 2020 calendar year
  • Your commercial enterprise will become a paid exhibitor/sponsor in the Education Expo upon acceptance
  • Your proposal can be delivered with a maximum of two (2) presenters. Panel discussions will not be accepted this year.
  • You agree to be responsible for any/all costs associated with presentation delivery. Presenters are not compensated
  • You agree that the presenter(s) (school board member, superintendent, administrator, educator, attorney) will be a paid convention registrant
  • You complete the online submission process by Friday, January 24, 2020 (Note: you may edit during the submission period of Dec. 2, 2019 – Jan. 24, 2020)
What You Will Need Before You Begin:

  4. Session Synopsis - 500 word maximum
  5. Proposed Learning Objectives- Maximum of 3
Session rooms will be equipped with the following:
  • Laptop
  • LCD projector 
  • Projection screen
  • Microphones, as appropriate 
  • Wireless Internet
If your proposal is accepted: 
  • All notification of accepted or declined proposals will be done via email - please be sure the email address provided is correct. If you do not receive an email by April 30, please contact Jennifer Kearney at jennifer.kearney@nyssba.org.
  • All speakers must sign a Speaker Agreement Letter, agreeing to the terms outlined above in the information section. A link to this electronic document will be included in the acceptance emails. 
  • NYSSBA reserves the right to revise session titles and descriptions. 
  • An electronic copy of your presentation will be required by Friday, September 18th. This can be uploaded via the Speaker Service Center. All presenters must come to the session with their presentation on a USB drive. NYSSBA will not have your presentation saved on the laptops in the session rooms.
