Dental Instruments 101: Mastering Instrument Reprocessing and Sterilization Protocols

Presented by Alyssa Aberle, MBA, RDH, CDIPC

Instrument reprocessing is at the heart of a dental practice’s infection control plan and maintaining a safe care environment for our patients. Dental team members must understand the importance of proper instrument sterilization. In this course, we will discuss the rationale behind each step in instrument reprocessing and how to avoid common mistakes.

Objectives:

  • Review the steps for instrument reprocessing
  • Discuss common errors or gaps in protocols
  • Help dental teams implement processes to ensure proper sterilization and decrease risk for infection control breaches.

Ms. Alyssa Aberle is a  graduate of the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine's dental hygiene program. Alyssa has spent her dental hygiene career working with several local nonprofit organizations. She has a Certificate in Dental Infection Prevention and Control (CDIPC) and works with dental teams to provide annual OSHA and infection control training, audit preparation, and consulting to help implement better infection prevention practices for their patients. Ms. Aberle's background as the Infection Control Coordinator for a large multi-site community health center gives her expertise in implementing systems to efficiently provide safe care.

Please note: This course is not intended to meet the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens annual training requirement as outlined in the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard.  This course is intended to be a “closer look” at a specific infection control-related topic to supplement the annual OSHA training required for all employees in your practice.
