Develop a deeper understanding of what equity means, what it looks like in practice, and how it is manifested (or stifled) on your campus.
Tuesday, February 14
9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. CT
Are you seeking steps to address your equity challenges? Are you looking for strategies to better support your equity-focused student success agenda? Are you ready to be empowered to spark change on your campus?
Join us in a highly interactive and approach-driven institute, aimed at addressing common equity challenges in community colleges. Using a facilitated student-centered design process, participants will generate asset-based strategies to advance equity at their institutions.
Dr. Maurice Swinney will lead the conversation at the DREAM 2023 Equity Institute.
Dr. Maurice Swinney is a nationally recognized equity leader in education who served as Chicago Public Schools’ (CPS) first-ever Chief Equity Officer and the interim Chief Education Officer.
While leading CPS’ Office of Equity, Dr. Swinney led the creation of the district’s first equity framework, which opens up greater opportunities for students and serves as a model for how large urban school districts can drive equity. Dr. Swinney also shifted funding to underserved schools and co-led the policy redesign process, making over 20 district policies more equitable.
Dr. Swinney’s accomplishments grew out of his 21 years of experience in education, serving as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal. He earned his Ed. D. in public school administration and a master’s in Educational Leadership/School Principalship. Now, as the Chief Innovation Officer at Chicago Beyond, Dr. Swinney will leverage his passion for equity and skills in innovative design to create more equitable systems for young people and communities.
By the end of the Institute, teams will develop an equity vision that describes the experience they want for their incoming Fall 2023 students. Teams will also leave with strategic and concrete steps to implement when they return to campus to move their vision forward.
Breakfast and lunch are included. Registrants receive a 15% discount when attending both DREAM 2023 and the ATD Equity Institute. See the fees below.

Learning Objectives
At the end of the institution, participants will:
learn, enhance, and apply a student-centered process for understanding and addressing systemic equity issues,
cultivate meaningful connections with devoted peers to strengthen collaboration,
learn how to strategically communicate equity issues and approaches to stakeholders,
leave empowered with a bank of potential strategies to common complex equity challenges facing community colleges.
