Maintaining Momentum: Redesigning Student Onboarding, Advising, and FYE through Disruption
During the 2019-2020 academic year, College of Lake County spent significant resources on designing a new student-focused, equity-minded model for student onboarding, advising, and first year experience. Despite encountering several challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, committed employees at CLC managed to implement the new model and make major changes in personnel, processes, policies, facilities, technology, and external partnerships. This presentation will share our collaborative, strategic process for navigating major organizational change and maintaining momentum on our student success efforts throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Refining the Early Alert Process to Eliminate Barriers to Student Success
Those of us working in higher education know there are barriers to student success outside of the classroom. Learn how Muskegon Community College has shifted to a holistic approach of assisting students through the early alert process. Through creation of our Care Team we have started with identifying students who need tutoring in developmental math and no real process, to having a full team of 9 staff assisting students with challenges ranging from tutoring to financial stability to mental health concerns. We will include data throughout the past couple years along with the services we have added along the way that derived from data-made decisions.

SKCTC Recovery Presentation Plan
The service region of SKCTC has suffered tremendously from poverty, job loss, out-migration, and an epidemic of substance abuse. Not only do we consider it our mission to provide a quality, affordable education for students, but we serve as a beacon of hope for our most vulnerable, including those in recovery. In a community-wide effort to provide them with a pathway to success, we partner with local agencies to identify and support students who have begun the recovery process. We have also created new avenues of opportunity, including an online, short-term Recovery Coach certificate with the option to apply this credential towards an associate and, eventually, a bachelor’s degree in counseling from one of our educational partners. We are also partnering with two residential recovery centers that are in the planning stages, one of which will break ground in spring 2022.

Structure and Culture: Audacious Strategies to Make Dual Enrollment Possible for Students Left Behind
Gateway to College students have complicated lives, compounded by systematic poverty and racism; traditional high schools often lack the flexibility they need to thrive. Gateway allows off-track students to complete their high school diploma in college -- a second chance at education in an adult learning environment. Gateway features a college schedule, personalized coaching with highly engaged advisors, invested faculty, and all the resources, support, and hope of a college environment. Because students enter with HS GPAs around 1.7, they need creative pathways to move from non-credit to credit classes. With this innovative model, students do thrive—earn their high school diplomas and continue postsecondary enrollment at high rates. Join us to discuss our strategies to maximize the benefits of dual enrollment for vulnerable students, taking great care to not damage our students’ college transcripts while they ground themselves, gather their power, and grow into college readiness.

Systematizing the Supports for New Students with Classroom-based Early Screening and Starfish Kudos
In fall 2016, CSM engaged in research and the pilot of promising practices for onboarding of students in large-enrollment, first-term courses. Since spring 2017, faculty volunteers have embedded iterations of a common syllabus quiz to screen students for engagement, needed supports, goals, readiness to learn, and awareness of strategies for success. Faculty included an early low-stakes content assignment to assess basic engagement and comprehension of the course content, and implemented an interim grade to give students time to adopt new learning strategies. In spring 2020, the faculty coordinators launched Hawk: Go! This revised content is infused in all sections of 19 courses and 170 CSM faculty are trained. Student services staff are trained to raise Starfish Kudos for students who use supports or achieve academic milestones. CSM’s team is implementing positive practices to support teaching and learning as we match students to supports and recognize students for positive results.

With Great Predictive Power Comes Great Responsibility, Spidey: Using Predictive Modeling to Identify Scholarship Recipients
Elgin Community College (ECC) piloted a scholarship initiative in 2020-2021 for students who had already completed a substantial number of credits (45+ credit hours) at the institution within the last few years, but had not yet graduated. This initiative's origin story began with the ECC Foundation, which had been given a directive by the Foundation Board to identify opportunities to use foundation dollars to help students most in need, but to also be able to provide evidence of any impact. In a classic partnership reminiscent of comic book superhero pairings, the Foundation worked with the ECC Institutional Research office to utilize predictive modeling to identify the predicted likelihood of "non-completer" students to complete their Associates Degree by the end of the academic year. This super-powered model was then used, among many other factors, in identifying the eventual scholarship awardees, but also as a means of statistically comparing outcomes with a comparison group.

The Fault in Our Gold Stars - Moving from Merit-Based to Mastery Grading to Support Student Success [TCU]
Our traditional systems of grading tend to reward behavior rather than knowledge, to be demotivating, and to demand endless workarounds by instructors to help motivate students to reach a higher outcome. In this session, we’ll introduce participants to evidence behind a new approach to grading and share how Carnegie Math Pathways is supporting institutions across our network to learn about and test new approaches to equitably assess student learning and motivate student persistence in Statway and Quantway courses. Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College math faculty will share details on the changes they’ve made to their course grading, and preliminary results and learnings from the first term of implementation. Through interactive jamboard and chat prompts, participants will be able to reflect on how current grading policies and practices lead to inequitable outcomes. They will also have the opportunity to consider more equitable grading models and try a sample alternative assessment tool

Spotlight: Expanding Equity and Access in Higher Education: The Role of Community College Baccalaureate Programs
Over the past decade, the number of community colleges offering bachelor’s degrees has increased substantially. Once limited to just a handful of locations and a few niche degrees, today 24 states and 145 public community colleges offer bachelor’s degrees in nearly 700 programs, ranging from computer science, to nursing, to teaching, to management. These degree programs are expanding access to affordable and convenient baccalaureate education to community college students in both urban and rural settings. This session will explore how community college baccalaureate programs fit into the community college mission, how they can address equity gaps in degree attainment, and how they can help diversify talent pathways and support the local economy. It will include findings from recent inventory of institutions and programs by New America as well as research on student demographics and outcomes. The session will also include leaders from pioneering ATD colleges that have developed highly successful baccalaureate programs across a range of disciplines. Speaker(s): Ivy Love, New America Mary Alice McCarthy, Director, Center on Education and Skills, New America Paul Moore, Dean, Academic Affairs and Dean, Business Pathway, Broward College Mary Alice McCarthy, New America Sunaina Veirendra, Program Chair and Applied Management Faculty, Skagit Valley College Ben Moritz, Deputy Director/Chief Academic and Student Services Officer, Wyoming Community College Commission

Spotlight: Continuing the Press for College Promise – Why It Still Matters and How to Build Support
College Promise programs – including over 348 local and 33 statewide programs plus the District of Columbia, seek to eliminate financial and systemic barriers to an affordable, quality postsecondary education that includes essential student supports. While recent proposals for a federal-state partnership seemed headed toward making college education as universal, free, and accessible as high school, stalled efforts jeopardize the nation’s ability to remain competitive in the global marketplace, to create pathways to economic and social mobility, and to prepare an educated citizenry. This session will make the case for why College Promise is worth the additional investments of our time, effort, and money; explore emerging models designed with equity goals in mind; and highlight the role of community college leaders in building internal and community support. Spotlight: The Economic Impact and Social Returns of a Collective Impact Approach to Building Community Vitality
Spurring economic growth and community vibrancy require credentialed adult's skillsets to align with current and emerging good, high-demand jobs. Utilizing a Collective Impact Model, the state of Illinois and the Greater Peoria Region, set out to ensure workforce equity for African Americans and uncredentialed adults of poverty with remarkable early outcomes. Community partnerships and collaboration between local and state government, employers, community-based organizations, economic development agencies, and community colleges were key to significantly increasing equitable opportunities and outcomes. Illinois Central College and its partners in the Workforce Equity Initiative will share how they applied an equity lens to provide workforce training programs and support systems in high demand employment sectors, to serve those from disproportionately impacted communities prioritizing African Americans. They will discuss the early results, collaborative efforts, programming, and wrap around services that changed lives.

Spotlight: Strengthening Pathways to Opportunity for Rural Americans
Rural community colleges play a critical role not only in higher education but in the American economy at large. For many students, rural community colleges remain the closest and most practical postsecondary opportunity. Yet, rural Americans attend college at lower rates than their urban peers, showing that we have more work to do to connect our rural neighbors with the educational opportunities our colleges offer. In this session, participants will hear lessons learned from three national organizations working on research and practice with community colleges to expand rural pathways to opportunity. Then, a panel of rural community college representatives will discuss their work to improve student success and higher education outcomes in their communities.

Centering Identity: An Inclusive Teaching Course for Community College STEM Faculty
Becoming an inclusive community college educator requires an understanding of the challenges community college learners face and how instructors can actively support them, as well as engagement in reflection upon one’s own identity and socialization to build empathy and enhance one’s connection, awareness, and sensitivity to student experiences. The Inclusive STEM Teaching course advances the awareness, self-efficacy and ability of instructors to cultivate inclusive learning environments for all their students. The online, asynchronous course is coupled with local in-person learning communities led by project-trained facilitators. Two runs have engaged more than 2500 current and future STEM faculty, with more than 100 community college participants, and several learning communities. Broward College has used the course to advance the professional development of faculty, as well as demonstrate the importance of inclusive teaching to institutional leaders.

STEM Pipelines to Success: Leveraging High-School & Industry Partnerships at Ohio Community Colleges
Innovative dual enrollment programs are on the rise to get students on a career pathway as early as possible and meet local industry needs. Within Ohio, two such colleges have had transformative impact on their local communities through hands-on, STEM education: Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) and Northwest State Community College. This work has been recently highlighted by the Ohio Association of Community Colleges in a series of case studies on strong College Credit Plus models – Ohio’s dual enrollment program. Tri-C’s Youth Technology Academy enables underserved urban students to earn college credits using an experiential, project-based technical curriculum, while Northwest’s STEM Public-Private Partnership Program provides rural students with technical education and advising support with valuable exposure to potential careers and employers. Both build a pipeline from high school to career, changing students’ perceptions about their readiness and ability to succeed in college.

Touching the Untouchables: “Star” Writer Visits and Student Success
Students often feel disconnected from the readings faculty present in courses. These writers seem “untouchable” or out of reach for students; a phantom “Star” in the ether. Amee Schmidt has developed a program to create accessibility to these “Star” writers for students, and the course studies matched the writers who visited. In Fall of 2021, professors Lauren Smith of Delta College and Bethany Eicher of SVSU participated and further developed the program. Anne Heidemann, Tribal Librarian, facilitated an extension including community members outside the college. Representatives from all three colleges will discuss the implementation of this program and student success. Students experienced a fuller sense of belonging as a result of one-on-one interaction with authors. Additionally, student compositions and discussions were more developed, and marginalized students embraced the opportunity to connect with a professional author who “looked like them.”

Voices Unmasked: Adding Student Voice to DEI+ B During COVID
The value of the student voice gathered through qualitative assessment and holistic measures to inform student success initiatives has been continually underestimated at community and state colleges. The student voice is often overshadowed by outcomes-based metrics such as year-to-year retention, course completion, and graduation rates. This presentation will describe how Florida State College at Jacksonville went beyond the traditional key performance indicators and developed a student climate survey with a supplemental Sense of Belonging study, bringing it from pilot to scale in one academic year. The mixed methods design 1) elevated the student voice and 2) provided useful insights to guide policy, practice, and institutional decision making. The presentation will review the mechanics of developing a climate survey item sets and conducting student focus groups both resulting in robust interdisciplinary discussions informing our institution’s Guided Pathways work.

Why Wait? Proactive Connection, Intervention, and Student Support with an Intake Survey
We know that the lives of our students are complex, and that holistic support can make the difference in student success. For over five years, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) has offered new students an intake survey focused on early identification of non-cognitive factors and potential barriers that may impact equity and success. Based on responses, service teams have developed a system of targeted and proactive student communications and interventions tailored to each student’s unique circumstances. Our experiences indicate that this approach of building relationships between service providers and students before classes begin is associated with improved academic performance, retention, and credential attainment. Come to this interactive and data-driven session to learn more about intake survey content and development as well as the strategies that maximize the impact of early intervention.

Storm the Gates! Math and English Corequisites Eliminate Barriers for Developmental Students [TCU]
Faculty were fed up with paltry answers to why 30% of developmental students completed gateway English and 24% completed gateway Math courses. We refused to simply cycle through new curriculum and placement methods hoping something would change. As both a tribal and a community college, the price of failure was too high for our students, 79% of whom are BIPOC, non-traditional, and/or low-income students. We implemented a corequisite model, placing developmental students directly into a college-level course while enrolling them in a supportive developmental course. Since beginning this program in 2017, completion of the college-level English courses rose dramatically. Gains are particularly apparent across all categories of underrepresented students. The program was scaled up to include Math in 2020. This presentation will show student data, include student and campus stakeholder stories via brief video clips, and contextualize the data using national trends from the Dana Center

A Nudge Goes a Long Way: Nudging towards supports in Amarillo
One of the key barriers in student success is the ensuring they use provided supports. In fact, only a quarter of students nation-wide utilize various supports for basic needs insecurity while more than half experience these insecurities. We show that one significant barrier is largely due to information gaps – a problem easily remedied. We highlight a cost-effective mechanism for encouraging students to utilize already extant campus supports. Evidence suggests strong positive impacts on utilization as a result of nudging in addition to clear academic impacts for students in developmental education. Previous evidence suggests that establishing a “culture of caring” through the centralization of on-campus supports may have a positive influence on campus climate. However, student outcomes still rely on utilization of those supports – if they are not used, they will not help. We examine the impact of email nudges to encourage utilization of supports and improve academic outcomes.

Baking Equity into the Pie (Chart)
Traditional assessment methods often do not fairly capture minority student outcomes. In this session, we propose that a well-designed assessment system can be a powerful tool to identify and solve issues of equity. At our college, we designed and implemented an integrated assessment system capable of sampling every student every semester. This assessment system allowed faculty to measure their own students with actual assignments. A modified VALUE rubric was used to normalize the individual results to allow aggregation of data across the entire college. This huge data set allows finely grained and nuanced understanding of who succeeds and when. The focus on equity required a new database system organized specifically around demographic categories available in the student information system. We quickly identified that even though most students do fine most of the time, it is often the same students who we have failed to support.

Data Close to Practice: Advancing Data Literacy for Equity and Student Success
This session helps two-year colleges launch data literacy programs to support underserved students. Meant for faculty, advisors, institutional researchers, and administrators, the session charts Northern Virginia Community College’s data literacy work. As a high-enrollment U.S. community college and ATD Leader College of Distinction, NOVA began its Data Close to Practice program in Spring ’21. Data Coaches worked with Data Teams to see disaggregated student success measures with an equity focus. In more than 60 meetings, teams worked with data dashboards to understand retention, course completion, graduation, and transfer metrics. In Fall ’21, through a train-the-trainer model, prior trainees modeled dashboards so new participants, called Early Adopters, could see equity gaps. Feedback helped create and improve the dashboards. This session is vital for institutions with similar goals. Presenters will share lessons learned in implementing equity definitions and sustaining the program.

Getting a Head Start: Dual Credit First Year Experience Courses
For years, North Central State College has promoted that entering degree-seeking students take a two-credit First Year Experience course. Data has shown not only increasing enrollments in this course, but also stronger correlation to second-term persistence for those taking the course versus those who do not. To "push down" this treatment, began offering a contextualized dual credit version of the course in 2019. Sections are taught online by NC State, as well as credentialed high school teachers at several diverse partner schools (urban, rural, e-school). The course has outcomes for career awareness, financial literacy, and soft skills necessary for school and life. It includes 10 hours of financial literacy to fulfill Ohio's high school graduation requirement. Of the 118 high school students that have taken the course since 2019, 105 has subsequently re-enrolled in a college course and 81 are enrolled in fall 2021.

Re-Imagining a Culture of Care for Student Affairs Employees
Disruption caused by the pandemic not only impacted students but it also affected Student Affairs employees. They were expected to meet the needs of students while often times challenging whether they were cared for as much as students and faculty. The rate of change that was required revealed gaps in knowledge of strategic priorities, lack of technical skills, and overall employee dissatisfaction. The success of students is connected to the success of the staff providing the service. Through the support of ATD, we embarked on a six-month journey to design a Student Affairs Professional Development Framework that would address these gaps and re-imagine a culture of care and success for our employees. Deliverables included a comprehensive framework, a staff assessment tool, and crosswalk to match the assessment responses to the appropriate training modules. The project culminated in a SA Professional Learning Day, “Sizzling Summer Fun” activities, and an annual plan.

Dream Lab: Expanding Access through Stronger K-12 Partnerships
K-12 partnerships are a crucial element of every college’s enrollment strategy and it is vital that colleges evaluate those partnerships for alignment with their strategic plan and equity agenda. ATD’s K-12 Partnership services support colleges in pursuit of more robust, supported, and equitable K-12 to college pathways. Through focused outreach and comprehensive supports, colleges can facilitate an appetite and readiness for college that makes postsecondary education a legitimate option for all members of their communities. In this session, explore how ATD’s K-12 Partnership Landscape Analysis and guidance on dual enrollment and early college for historically under-resourced populations can help colleges bring strategic focus to these crucial partnerships and build a portfolio of impactful, equity-driven programs.

Visioning a New Possible: A Conversation on the Leadership Needed to Reimagine Education
Going back to normal after the pandemic is not really an option. The world has changed too much, we have learned too much, and normal wasn’t working for too many students anyway. In this conversation, we’ll move beyond normal, even beyond a “new normal”, toward what might be an altogether more impactful world in education: a “new possible”. Building out a vision of a new possible, however, will require leaders able to adopt a learner-centered, holistic, and strategic reimagining of our modes (e.g., in class, online, hybrid), models (e.g., personalized, competency, short-cycle), and supports (e.g., holistic advising, basic needs support, mental health). Come join a dialogue on how the new possible may come together in the months and years to come and how it might help more and more diverse students be more successful than ever before.

Amplifying Student Success - Voices from Prison
Sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa.
The landscape of higher education in prison requires expansive program evaluation, this case study of Cerro Coso is an ongoing student and faculty centered evaluation process to achieve a holistic approach to prison higher education that translates to main campus. Presenters will provide a roadmap to revamping of prison faculty training for the 45 faculty in our program. Including a 4 day trauma inform prison faculty retreat. With detailed student centered data, including a 4 year comparative success and retention evaluation of over 450 courses taught in prison in comparison to traditional campus courses will be dissected to clearly demonstrate to the audience program short falls, hard learned lessons, and concrete replicable successes. These research initiatives will fit within a broad overview of a program that has 7 transferable AA/S degrees and over 1200 face-to-face students per year in prison. Understanding these issues at scale is critical for any quality program to grow. Digital Justice Faculty Learning Circle: An Equity Focused Community of Practice
How can a community of practice support practitioners in redesigning their digital learning environments to center culturally responsive teaching that ensures equitable student learning outcomes? Panelists will share results from a research-practitioner partnership (RPP), an Every Learner Everywhere initiative focused on reimagining introductory courses to center equity-minded practices in digital teaching and learning. Five faculty teams from HBCUs, HSIs, and AANAPISIs collaborated with Achieving the Dream and Digital Promise in the Digital Justice Faculty Learning Circle. The shared goal of this community of practice leveraged the collective knowledge of participants to equitize teaching and learning processes and environments by reflecting on the application and impact of culturally responsive teaching strategies. This professional learning experience afforded peer-to-peer sharing and knowledge exchange that supported community members to interrogate their own practice to eliminate barriers that marginalize students from traditional learning experiences.

OER in the Classroom: The Outcomes of the Teaching & Learning with OER Study
The adoption and use of open educational resources (OER) in higher education has grown exponentially over the past two decades. Colleges with OER programs have helped save their students millions of dollars in textbook costs, savings students can invest in additional courses or covering needed living expenses.
But what is the impact of OER in the classroom? Many faculty who use OER in their courses argue that openly licensed content helped transform their teaching, giving them more freedom and control over the course content and enabling them to integrate more student-centered and equitable instructional practices into the curricula. However, there is little evidence to show whether these changes in instruction enabled by OER benefit students. Over the past two years, Achieving the Dream and SRI have collaborated with eight community colleges with mature OER programs to explore how the adoption of openly licensed materials enable open educational practices and culturally responsive teaching. Funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, this research project seeks to better understand how OER initiatives at community colleges influence the transformation of instruction, how students experience OER-enabled instructional practices, and which institutional policies and practices facilitate or impede changes to instructional practices through the use of OER. During this session, project staff from ATD and SRI, as well as faculty from the colleges studied, will share the outcomes of this study, including previewing a framework that categorizes how practitioners in community college environments conceptualize open educational practices and connect these practices with OER and equity-focused instruction. Summer STEM Programming: A Bridge to Completion
Through a five-year Title III HSI STEM Grant, Passaic County Community College developed and implemented strategies for Hispanic and low-income students to explore and pursue STEM academic and career pathways. The centerpiece of the grant was the STEM Scholar Academy, a STEM-focused summer bridge program for first-year students which included a college success course, college algebra course, personalized success coaching, and opportunities for academic support and enrichment. Findings from a quasi-experimental study show that bridge program students were more likely to remain enrolled, complete key math courses, and earn an associate’s degree within two years. Additionally, a robust implementation study identified key factors for successful implementation, including the role of success coaches. This session will present impacts on academic outcomes; context provided by staff and faculty; and student voices represented in surveys, focus groups, and feedback from success coaches.

The Superpower in a Retention Story [TCU]
Data can be a Superpower for people when it is available, clearly articulated, and actionable. But that is often much easier said than done no matter the size of the institution because data is often siloed, misunderstood, put into a report designed for compliance, or perceived as a weapon designed to expose the guilty. Presenters from United Tribes Technical College will share their strategies for making data available to people doing the work in a way that is consumable and elicits actionable insights leading to intentional data-driven changes. These strategies, which involve faculty, students, middle management, and administration, have helped UTTC exceed the goals they set for persistence and retention, despite remote learning situations prompted by the pandemic!

Journey to Launch: Looking for Academic Equality & Engaging More Students Through Online Orientation [TCU]
Online Learning was thriving even before the COVID 19 Pandemic, and an increase in the number of students attending online courses has steadily grown. This option that allows greater flexibility for students to pursue higher education presents certain barriers that contribute to challenges of learning online. Leech Lake Tribal College (LLTC) created an online orientation program using the Student Online Learning Orientation Support (SOLOS) system. After evaluating students’ technological readiness, the program launched and the college started to dig into evaluation data. Ilisagvik College reached out to LLTC regarding their adoption of SOLOS and an online orientation and adapted the program to launch their own online orientation required for all students. In this session we will interact with the SOLOS system, unpack the common barriers to a successful orientation, identify tools that can enhance student engagement online, and identify ways you can incorporate student feedback in real time.

Buckets of Progress: Rewriting NECC’s Academic Standards and Progress Policy to Support Success
Last year, NECC rewrote its Academic Standards and Progress Policy to make it a source of support, rather than a barrier to student success. Simply putting students into standing buckets based on overall GPA was missing important markers of progress, and not providing enough opportunity for meaningful intervention. Bringing together members of Academic and Student Affairs, we wrote a new policy that gives students two full semesters to make progress, and that measures progress at both the Term and Overall GPA level. In this presentation, we share the process we used and how it intersected with our institutional commitment to closing equity gaps in student outcomes. Participants will have a chance to compare our previous and current policies and give us feedback on the progress we have made so far. To facilitate this work, we will use a web-based interactive platform, and provide participants with links to document review tools we have used at NECC to ensure transparency and equity.

From Pandemic Panic to Humbling Growth, Improved Community, and a Vision for Teaching-and-Learning
During the shock, stress, and exhaustion in the shift to fully virtual instruction in Spring 2020, Porterville College faculty also learned the extent to which their teaching skills proved inadequate for the challenge of ensuring quality instruction for their students over the next 18 months. In May 2020, conversations among some faculty and administrators resulted in a summer webinar series called ‘Quick Tips for Online Success’, intended to help faculty navigate this period. Its success led to its renewal and evolution into ‘Quick Tips for Teaching Success’, as the faculty team expanded their vision to all modalities of instruction and saw the need for comprehensive, ongoing faculty professional development and greater peer-support to ensure a faculty culture that embraces teaching-and-leaning innovation. We are now developing a plan for a Center for Teaching and Learning, and are emerging from the pandemic as stronger teachers and with a greater sense of unity and purpose.

H2C: A Public-Private Partnership to Address Local Health Care Workforce Needs
In 2019, South Central College (SCC), Faribault Public Schools, the Faribault Chamber of Commerce, and local industry partners began researching the P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High School) program. P-TECH, a successful national model, puts underserved students on a pathway to high-skilled, high-wage careers. Students take technical courses in high school that apply toward a college degree, allowing them graduate from high school with a diploma and a college award. The P-TECH model also has a strong focus on integrating hands-on, work-based learning to prepare students for their chosen field. In 2020–2021, SCC and Faribault partners developed the High School to College and Career (H2C as named by Faribault High School Students) Health Sciences Pathway based on the P-TECH model. This pathway focuses on health care occupations, aligns with SCC’s current health science programs, and provides students the opportunity to earn up to 36 college credits while in high school.

In 2019, Columbus State launched several independent programs using various models of holistic student support delivered through single point of contact case-management. The structure, size, purpose, and students of each program were unique and provided the ideal environment for future institution-wide scaling.
Collaboration between the programs led to the creation and usage of automated, cohort-based reporting that enabled advisors to focus their efforts on timely, proactive, and targeted outreach and intervention with students.
The automated reports have been replicated and implemented in more than a dozen offices across campus and will serve as an important foundation for launching Columbus Promise, a city-wide program beginning in 2022.
This presentation will focus on providing an overview of how the automated reports have been implemented as well as share lessons learned, promising practices, and future plans for scaling.

Innovative Collaboration Session: The Role of Institutions and Technology in Creating Inclusive Communities for Students
Sponsored by Ellucian.
The recent year has challenged higher education to rethink its educational strategies when it comes to the learner experience and inclusive education. Between the shift to online learning as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the emerging market of diverse learners, most institutions, classrooms, and communities are being asked to focus on inclusive and equitable strategies for students at all stages of their college experience. Due to technological barriers, lack of resources, and digital literacy issues, online education and its delivery can pose unique challenges to inclusive practices. This discussion will focus on inclusive and equitable strategies we can employ through online learning to help advance student success. We are particularly interested in discussing strategies that will focus on ways institutions can support all learners and foster a sense of belonging, empathy, and access through the culture of care. Our goal is to engage participants in a discussion about best practices for transforming learning to meet DEI standards and the role that faculty and institutions play in promoting equitable solutions for their students. We will also focus on how institutions can leverage technology and community partnerships to promote access to all students and maximize the student experience. This will be an active discussion where we intend to hear from our participants regarding what has worked and what they want to see for the future of inclusive and equitable education. Participants will work collaboratively to develop inclusive strategies and a vision for the future of higher education. Speaker(s): Heidi Schuler, Learning Experience Designer, Ellucian Tara Kissel, Senior Learning Experience Designer, Ellucian Carrie Ann Potenza, Senior Director, Strategy and Planning, Ellucian

Innovative Collaboration Session: Data Deep Dive: Clues to a Sustainable Community College Recovery
Sponsored by Civitas.
The latest figures on community college enrollment raise dire questions on how community colleges and their students can chart a path to recovery, nearly two years into a pandemic that has upended nearly every facet of the student experience and higher education landscape. The steady erosion of hard-fought gains in enrollment, declining transfer rates, and widening equity gaps suggest the crisis may have long-term impacts in the community college sector at a scope and scale yet to be fully revealed. How has the pandemic exacerbated existing equity gaps or created new ones? How can colleges retool their existing student success initiatives to address a new set of challenges facing students? And during this critical next phase of higher education recovery, how can community colleges use data to regain the improvements in enrollment and student success from pre-pandemic? Join this interactive discussion with leaders and practitioners who will mix their understanding with national data—and campus-specific insights—to offer clues to recovery. Creating a Poverty-Informed Culture
How do we change organizational culture ? Specifically, how do we draw higher-education staff and faculty toward poverty-informed practice both in student interactions and in behind-the-scenes decision-making? By detailing milestones and metrics in Western Technical College’s evolution toward economic justice and a truly level the playing field, this session seeks to provide answers to these questions. Presenters will sketch out the diffuse, grassroots efforts—including trainings, basic needs solutions, “No” audits, and programmatic developments—that led up to the formation of the College’s Poverty Informed Practice Strategy Team. Then, they’ll detail how this leaderless but powerful movement lives on in and beyond the Team’s work, helping to close gaps between Pell-eligible students and their peers. Topics include removing admission barriers, expanding food pantries, distributing emergency aid and other resources, and amplifying student voice.

How Can Colleges Reach Underserved Learners to increase Enrollment and Completion?
Community colleges are working to meet rapidly shifting needs and demands – of the economy, current students, and their communities. This session begins with a vision for change: JFF’s new Guided Career Pathways framework. We then provide two evidence-based exemplars to reach two groups currently underrepresented among community college learners – young Black and brown men and un/under-employed adults. The Back on Track model has built pathways to family supporting jobs for over 1,200 youth in 7 cities; and Lorain County Community College’s Fast Track program last year provided 1,003 unemployed adults with in-demand credentials and a path for continued skill development and long-term success. These programs demonstrate the essential role of partnerships and supports for populations who have been historically underrepresented in community college programs. Participants will learn about the institutional changes needed to recruit, retain and succeed with nontraditional learners.

Innovative Collaboration Session: Community College Practice-Research-Policy Exchange
Sponsored by UMGC.
Now more than ever, community college leaders need research-based solutions to the challenges facing their institutions. While there’s a growing body of community college research, it’s not always connected to the immediate needs of college leaders trying to make changes on their campuses. To connect research to practice more directly, the authors—whose careers span decades of research and service to community colleges—have formed the Community College Practice-Research-Policy Exchange. Our goal is to build a two-way loop between practitioners and researchers that will deliver empirical findings into the hands of practitioners in the field. In short, the goals for our Practice-Research-Policy Exchange are to (1) develop a first-of-its-kind practitioner-defined national community college research agenda and (2) disseminate research findings in consumable formats that will promote research-informed policies and best practices at community colleges throughout the country. The partners have completed the pilot phase of the project after meeting with the National Council of State Directors of Community Colleges and college presidents from 10 states, as well as presidents from ATD Leader Colleges of Distinction. Presenters will share the preliminary results of the pilot project and a sample of the end-product from the Exchange. This project has two lead managing partners: the University of Maryland Global Campus Program in Community College Policy and Administration and the North Carolina State University Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research. Speaker(s): Rey Garcia, Professor/Program Director, Community College Policy and Administration, University of Maryland Global Campus Larry Nespoli, Adjunct Professor, University of Maryland Global Campus Ken Ender, Professor of Practice, North Carolina State University

(Advance Registration Required)
Colleges that are serious about finding and serving the students who need us the most are thinking holistically and broadly about equitable access – as much more than just opening doors. As a first step they are examining their data and seeking new sources of information to better understand who is coming to college and who is not, as well as who is being well-served by the college and who is not. By embracing this new access agenda, they are building a new pathway for the talent that is being lost in our communities while also paving the way to sustainability for colleges and the long-term recovery in the neighborhoods that need it the most.
