Gateway to College Peer Learning Conference: A Virtual Event
Reflect & Reset: Building on 20 Years of Community & Innovation
Out of an abundance of caution and following state and federal guidelines, this year’s conference is being held online. The 2020 Gateway to College Peer Learning Conference is an interactive, remote conference experience for educators, administrators, and student support specialists working with previously disconnected high school students in a college setting to exchange effective practices, strategies, and concerns with their peers.
As school districts and colleges adapt to an education system that transitioned to remote instruction almost overnight, many of our most vulnerable students are missing out on instruction and the crucial supports that come with being a part of a school community. Disengagement from school or graduating high school unprepared for college was already a risk for thousands of young people each year and the campus closures resulting from coronavirus have increased that risk significantly.
For twenty years, Gateway to College programs across the country have provided an opportunity for off-track and out-of-school students to complete a high school diploma while beginning their postsecondary education career supported by personalized coaching. Gateway to College increases the equity and impact of dual enrollment or early college programming by extending the opportunity to students who would not have otherwise completed high school.
Participants will be engaged in:
- Strategies for adapting to the consequences of COVID-19 campus closures
- Sustainable college / K-12 partnerships
- Reengaging out-of-school youth: Outreach, Recruitment, and Enrollment
- Holistic support for first-generation and low-income college students
- Effective dual enrollment strategies for struggling high school students
- Personalized coaching for struggling high school & college students
- Effective interventions or culturally specific services for unique populations
- Effective use of data for continuous improvement
We know that strong, collaborative peer relationships depend on personal connection in addition to shared expertise. The remote Peer Learning Conference will feature on-going discussion forums for those crucial, impromptu ‘between session’ chats. In addition to conference sessions, attendees will also have an opportunity to attend additional social activities, including a remote reception, small group discussions, and possibly even karaoke or a dance party (pending interest).
