Cultivating More Inclusive Attitudes Among the Public
In a deeply divided nation, museums can play an essential role in creating safe and welcoming spaces for the most marginalized and at-risk communities. However, as museums strive to share more complete, accurate, and inclusive content, audience response can vary widely. In this session, we'll examine the spectrum of attitudes on inclusive content in museums and explore research-backed strategies we can use to cultivate more inclusive attitudes and behaviors among all visitors for the benefit of society as a whole.

Addressing Colonial-Era Provenance: Lessons from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
As European nations address their legacy of colonialism, many museums in France, Germany, Great Britain, and elsewhere in Western Europe are examining the provenance of objects in their collections that were removed during periods of colonial occupation and, in some cases, have developed plans for their restitution. But few American museums have announced similar objectives. In this moderated conversation, learn about how the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) developed its colonial-era research project, namely the parameters, objectives, and outcomes so far. This discussion will offer practical guidance and insight for other US collecting institutions interested in embarking on similar projects.

Museums and historic sites have the potential to address historical injustices through reparative practices, engaging diverse audiences to promote a more inclusive and authentic understanding of U.S. history. Yet, many of these institutions have fallen short in interpreting crucial facts, such as the roles of indigenous and Black populations and the enslavement of Black people by prominent figures in American history. Explore the evolving challenges in the weaponization of Black history and discover strategies to ensure its proper acknowledgment and contribution to the nation's narrative.
