Facility Tours

We believe there is a benefit to seeing hands-on operations.  Our local host committee has coordinated several local operational tours available to attendees on Tuesday, May 24 and Wednesday, May 25.  You can sign up for these tours at the IPI Host desk prior to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 23.


Tuesday, May 24, 2011:  8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Tours are provided and operated by the Pittsburgh Host Committee & Lenzer Transportation Services. Most tours will depart from 10th Street at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center unless otherwise stated.


Campus/Medical Center Tour
To include:  Children’s Hospital, University of Pittsburgh including Pitt Soldiers & Sailors Garage, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) includes Shadyside & Presbyterian, and VA Hospital

The University of Pittsburgh consistently demonstrates that it is one of the world’s finest and most productive universities.  As a public research institution with more than 34,000 students and more than 12,000 employees, Pitt is a primary driver of the region’s economy.  More than $1.7 billion in local expenditures, nearly 33,800 jobs generating $1.3 billion in personal income, nearly $700 million in funded research, and $145.2 million in local government revenues can be attributed to the presence of the University in Allegheny County.


Special Event/Stadium Parking Tour

To include: 

PNC Park & Heinz Field facilities, Consol Energy Center Arena, Rivers Casino (777 Casino Dr., Pittsburgh, PA 15212)

Pittsburgh has several parking structures throughout the City to support its appetite for sports and entertainment, particularly on its North Shore.  This tour will include several parking facilities specifically built to handle large special event and entertainment crowds.

The Rivers Casino parking garage is a 3,800 space facility located on Pittsburgh’s North Shore, home of Heinz Field, PNC Park and the Carnegie Science Center among other venues.  This 9 story, 1.3 million square foot structure provides shared parking for both casino patrons and special event patrons.  Operational features at the facility include a Las Vegas style speed ramp and space occupancy sensor system.

Two parking facilities recently built by the Sports and Exhibition Authority (SEA), the West General Robinson Street Garage and Consol Arena Garage, support the extraordinary parking demand for several sports teams including the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates and Penguins.

Wednesday, May 25, 2011:  8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Downtown Pittsburgh Parking & Transit Tour
To include: Grant Street Transportation Center, First Avenue Garage (multi-modal), Station Square

We will travel through the downtown area sharing some historical data, talking about local attractions, points of interest and the daily challenges we face as parking professionals.

The multi-modal tour will include two Pittsburgh Parking Authority facilities, the Grant Street Transportation Center and the First Avenue Garage & Station.  The Grant St. facility, built in 2008, is comprised of approximately 1,000 spaces and supports longer-term transportation modes including Greyhound and Amtrak.  The facility also supports the David Lawrence Convention Center and Theater District.


The First Avenue Garage & Station is a 1,250 space facility attached to a Port Authority “T’ Station, supporting local commuters.  In addition, the garage borders the Eliza Furnace Trail, a popular trail that offers a unique view of various city bridges, landmarks and views of downtown used by commuters, walkers, bikers, joggers, and skaters of all ages.  To enhance the trail a bike, inline skating rental and refreshment station was developed by the Parking Authority.

Pittsburgh International Airport Tour

 

To include:  Airport parking and ground transportation operations and viewing AVI (Automatic Vehicle Identification) system.

This tour will include a drive around the Airport Roadway system to show the layout of the lots, the hold lot & the commercial roadway operation. We will also be sharing a power point presentation in Conference Room A covering the growth of parking, the equipment & it's integration, & our new technology (our dashboard & mobile website). Our tour will then include a visit to the Short Term parking garage which will be in the middle of a major rehab project. We will conclude the tour with a visit to the Parking Management office to see the heart of our operation.
